Do you drink enough water? What is enough water? Why should you even drink it in the first place and why is it so important?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock at some point in your life you’ve been told to drink more water. You’ve been warned that getting dehydrated is bad for you and that water is a good thing. But have you really stopped to find out why water is so good for you beyond the basics of staying dehydrated?

Let’s start with the big picture; your body need water in order to perform pretty much every single function that it carries out. That’s right practically everything that you do needs water. Some of the water can be taken from the food you eat but most of it you need to drink.

How much should I be drinking?

How much you should drink varies on a few factors like the kind of climate you live in, how active you are and also your own bodies needs, here’s a great way to work out a good base level to start at:

  • Take your weight in pound, divide that by two and then that is the minimum fluid ounces you should drink each day
  • So if you weigh 160 pounds you should drink at least 80 fluid ounces per day
  • If you live in a hot or humid climate or you are very active or workout regularly then you need to increase this amount.

How do you get through your water each day?

Get yourself a nice reusable bottle, or two, and always keep one with you. Keep sipping at your water through the day rather than downing pints of it in the evening in a panic because you haven’t hit your target. Try to have a glass 20-30 minutes before each meal, this will help to kick start your digestive system and also help you get through that daily target.

So, what about if you don’t like the taste of water? In some areas you may have ‘hard’ water and this can really effect the flavour so it might put you off. Whilst we don’t want to add in any unnecessary nasties to the water its perfectly fine to add things like fresh fruit, or essential oils to give it a taste you will enjoy.

Water and your mental health.

Staying properly hydrated is massively important for your mental health. Do you ever wake up in the morning and you’re in a bad mood? How about getting irritable and your not sure why? Do you sometimes struggle with poor memory? Do you get headaches on a regular basis? Are struggling with energy slumps?

These could all be signs of mild dehydration and a hint that you need to be increasing your water intake. You would be surprised just how quickly you can turn these issues around by simply upping your water intake. Give it a try the next time you start to feel yourself dip and see what kind of difference it makes for you. Being even slightly dehydrated can have a particularly negative effect for you if you already suffer with stress or anxiety so also bear that in mind as you focus on getting enough water.
